A member of the Birmingham Irish Cycle Appeal team handed over £1,000 cheque to the Garden Suite at the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch on the 26th of November.

Des Lennon from Tyholland, Co. Monaghan joined the Birmingham Irish Cycle Appeal, along with the late John Marquiss and their pal Lee Ryan, back in 2000. Their role was ‘back-up’ to the team undertaking the East Coast of Ireland ride.

Des was lorry driver, John in charge of ‘chuck’ and Lee was lead vocalist. After many years of driving the back-up wagon, and insurance issues due to age, Des decided that he’d had enough and got the bike out.

At first, he went off on his own to train and built up the miles gradually, but the lure of all day Saturday out on the bike was too great and so a natural cyclist was born. Leading from the front, no hill was too steep and the team often struggled to keep up with him. In 2010 Des undertook the Giants Causeway to Blarney Castle, Cork, and in 2011 the Mizen Head to Malin Head, West Coast Ride; not bad going for a seventy-something man!

One of Des’s most memorable moments was having cycled up the Glenshane Pass into Derry and having stopped at the ‘Inn at the Cross’ to wait for the rest of the team to catch up. He took a little snooze on the sunny embankment and when his younger teammates finally caught up with him, over an hour and a half later, they took the opportunity of dousing him with water – just to teach him a lesson!

Fund raising was no problem to Des, his experiences with the Monaghan Association and the Cavan Association with his wife Anne, stood him in good stead, and everyone was happy to sponsor him.

Des has become a legend within the BICA Team and well respected for his cycling prowess, and even though a recent illness has kept him off the bike in the past year, his fund raising efforts are here to be seen, with himself and Anne presenting a cheque for £1,000 to the League of Friends at the Garden Suite at the Alexandra, where Des has been receiving some treatment.
