Abseil daredevils raise £6K for Acorns
Daring abseilers have scaled new heights by raising hundreds of pounds more than expected for a local charity.
More than £6,000 was raised for Acorns Children’s Hospice as the result of a fundraising abseil down a Birmingham department store.
Forty-eight people from across the West Midlands and beyond descended the House of Fraser building and raised a total of £6,277.84. Organisers had requested each daredevil to pledge at least £75 each. However the average amount raised per abseiler soared to £130 – almost double the amount expected.
The event took place on Sunday 13 April and was sponsored by BLOC Hotel which is situated in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. The hotel’s general manager 26 year old Hannah Hartland from Stechford was one of the abseilers. She said: “Abseiling has always been on my bucket list and what better reason to do it than to raise money for Acorns.
“We wanted to support a local charity which we thought was offering the best service to the local community so choosing Acorns was a no brainer. I don’t know anyone who has used Acorns, however if I’m ever unfortunate enough to be in that situation it’ll be a great relief to know that Acorns will be there to support me and my family.”
Acorns major events officer Shujea Khatun said: “We’d like to thank everyone who took part, those who sponsored entrants and BLOC Hotel, who all helped make the day such a success. It was great to see so many people putting their fears aside to raise money for such as good cause.
“The amount raised will help make a difference to many life limited children and their families. We rely on events like this to raise money to provide the vital care and support that these children and families require. It costs £750 a day to care for each child at Acorns hospices so every penny counts.”
The charity is offering fearless fundraisers another opportunity to take part in an abseil later this year. Acorns will be holding another descent on Saturday 4 October in Walsall at the New Art Gallery. It costs £40 to enter and abseilers are expected to raise £100 minimum in sponsorship.
