Club Eireann members enjoy “Ceiliúradh” – Celebration in London
A group of Sandwell Irish Society’s Club Eireann members enjoyed an overnight stay in London recently when they attended the “Ceiliúradh” (Celebration) concert at the Royal Albert Hall, which was held in honour of President Michael D. Higgins during his historic state visit to Britain.
Official invitations were received from the Irish Ambassador, Mr. Daniel Mulhall, for the Society’s Chair, Mrs. Nora Gethen and Manager Mrs. Siobhan Gorman to represent the organisation at the concert. There was great interest from Club Eireann members, who regularly attend activities organised by the Society, to secure tickets when they went on sale – and after several long telephone calls to the Box Office, enough tickets were obtained.
Denis Neenan, Secretary of Erin Go Brágh GAA Club in Erdington, kindly offered the use of the club’s minibus to Laurence Dowd, a friend of the Society’s, rooms were booked at a hotel in west London and we were on our way!
The concert showcased a variety of Irish music, song, dance and spoken work from Ireland and the UK and was attended by Their Highnesses Prince and Princess Michael of Kent as well as President Higgins and his wife Sabine and several Irish Government ministers.
It was the first time that most Club Eireann members had visited the Royal Albert Hall and it really is a magnificent building, though some of the seats were a bit high up in the gods! The hotel in Ealing was comfortable, we enjoyed a get-together there after the concert and set off the next day for our return to West Bromwich after a full Irish breakfast and a visit to Ealing Abbey!
Siobhan said, “Our sincere thanks go to Denis and Erin Go Brágh GAA club for lending us their minibus, we kept the music going and the craic was mighty on the journey! Grateful thanks also to Laurence, who was our excellent chauffeur and brought us all home safely. Our special day was made possible thanks to your kindness and generosity!
