Sheldon Heath Social Club is set to host the latest Irish Variety Night for the local charity, KIDS. The event, taking place on Saturday May 3rd , follows on from the success of the last charity event held at Maryvale Community Centre which raised over £1,200 for outdoor play equipment for the KIDS Early Years Service.

KIDS is a leading disabled children’s charity that has been in existence for over 40 years working to enable disabled children and young people and their families to enjoy their lives.

KIDS work with children and young people from birth to the age of 25 who are disabled; that is they have a physical, sensory or mental impairment (including mental health issues) which in interaction with social, attitudinal and environmental constraints creates barriers which hinder their full and equal participation in society. Our work is also with the individuals who are affected by this situation; such as families and young carers.

The money raised at the Irish Night in Sheldon will be used to repair, refurbish and modernise the KIDS holiday caravan. The caravan is offered to all families with disabled children/young people at extensively reduced rates however, in order for KIDS to be able to continue to offer this facility a number of items need replacing. These include carpets, bedding (including mattresses), radiators, cooker, light fittings, foldaway bed as well as steam cleaning the furnishings and carrying out repairs to the decking area/safety gates, to name but a few.

This event has only been made possible by the number of volunteers and entertainers who have worked extremely hard and given of their time and resources to ensure the evening has the very best of Irish entertainment.

The evening kicks off with Fran the Man singing much loved Irish country and western songs ranging from waltzes to quick steps and everything in between! Irish dancers from the John Carey Dance Academy follow Fran with their fantastic display of Irish dance and then Michael Collins will have everyone in hysterics with his legendary storytelling. Following Michael a chance to enjoy some of the best Irish traditional music from the 10-piece Trad Irish Band, which is made up of some members of the Reel Note with a number of special guests joining them. You will also get a chance to practice your Ceili dancing – no experience necessary as there will be callers helping you through your steps. Then enjoy the music of Fran the Man for the final hour of this great night out!

As well as the entertainment there will be great raffle prizes to be won, a chance to play Irish Bingo and the Whisky Roll – don’t ask, all will be revealed on the night!

Doors open at 7pm and the entertainment begins at 7.30pm. The last event sold out well in advance so book your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Tickets are £7.50 which includes an evening cold buffet and can be obtained from: Liz Cunningham at KIDS on 0121 355 2707, elizabeth.cunningham@kids.org.uk or Paul Chawner on 07711 440831 or call in at Sheldon Heath Social Club, Brays Road, Sheldon, B23 2RJ, tel: 0121 743 6783.
