Results in Warwickshire Football Leagues
Senior:
St
Mary’s 1:12
St Finbarrs 0:6
Sean McDermotts 2:10
St Barnabas 0:4
Erin Go Bragh 2:9
John Mitchels 0:10
The Senior Football league kicked off with 3 interesting
clashes, while County Champions Roger Casements enjoyed a free
weekend while in Boston, celebrating their success of last year.
2004 League winners Erin Go Bragh were involved in a tight game
with Birmingham rivals John Mitchels, that went down to the line.
A late goal had given Erin Go Bragh a small lead as the game entered
injury time, but try as they might Mitchels could not break through
for a share of the spoils. The game was settled with Erin Go Bragh’s
second goal during added time.
In Coventry St Mary’s gained a measure of revenge for last
seasons championship defeat, when they had 9 points to spare over
St Finbarrs in what was described as an entertaining game. It was
good to see St Finbarrs in action and it is hoped that they will
build on this performance during the season. St Marys will be happy
to start their season on a positive note.
In the other senior clash, Sean McDermotts had a comfortable victory
over St Barnabas, eventually winning by 12 points. McDermotts have
carried on where they left off last season and despite what was
a pretty average year for them by their own high standards in 2004,
there is no doubt that they will be strong challengers in all competitions
this year.
Intermediate:
The
Gaels 3:12
Sons Of Erin 1:4
O’Rahilly’s
4:8
St Brendans 2:4
John
Mitchels 1:13
Erin Go Bragh 0:5
The
initial matches in the 2005 Intermediate league saw some very good
scoring returns, with 2 teams from the East of the County impressing.
The Gaels from Rugby have challenged for various honours
in the Intermediate grade in recent years. In 2004 they won
the Mulligan Cup and evidence
of their first competitive game of 2005 suggests that they will be
strong challengers in this grade. Their victims Sons Of Erin
have just been regraded from senior, at their own request, due to
retirement and departure of a number of players. It is a position
they have been in before and are expected to rebuild
under the stewardship of Sean Griffin and John Healy.
Equally impressive were O’Rahilly’s from Corby who notched
4 goals in their defeat of St Brendans, who were playing their first
intermediate game for a number of years. This match was really a
game of goals, with 6 in all scored. Both teams had their ‘shooting
boots’ on but the Corby lads always had the edge
in this fixture.
The other Intermediate fixture saw John Mitchels defeat
reigning Champions Erin Go Bragh by 11 points. Mitchels
were on top for most of this game and fully deserved their
victory, despite the best efforts of their opponents.
