Toaiseach resigns
After nearly 11 years in office, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has announced his resignation in effect from May 6.
The Taoiseach addressed the Irish nation from the government buildings on the 2nd of April and he delivered an emotional speech stating he will tender his resignation to President Mary McAleese on the aforementioned date.
Mr Ahern's career in politics began at the age of 17, when he first signed up with Fianna Fáil.
He is the first leader of Fianna Fáil to have successfully won 3 office terms since Eamon De Valera and during his career; the Taoiseach notably aided the Good Friday Agreement and guided Ireland through its economical boom.
In his speech he thanked his colleagues for their support and he stated that his resignation is not due to recent developments and that he had always performed his best for the people of Ireland.
Double murder in Kerry
30-year-old Thomas Barrett from Causeway, Co. Kerry has been charged with the murder of a father and son, last month.
Michael Hanrahan aged 60 and his son Denis 27, were found shot dead at their home in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.
