What a great day it was and what a great way to raise money for humanitarian projects in Africa, especially knowing the kind and generous nature of Irish people.
Several people from Sandwell, including Sandwell’s Rose of Tralee, Claire Diamond, were in Parc n’Eireann recently to support the GAA for Africa Day that was organised by Denis Neenan and others.
There was a lot to see and do and Sandwell Rose Claire was kept busy throughout the afternoon. She was invited to throw in the ball for the final between Erin go Bragh and Ardoyne Kickhams and advised to “run for your life” off the pitch as soon as she had tossed the ball in the air. Claire managed to get off just in time before the match continued fast and furiously.
Claire has a lovely voice and was per-suaded by one Michael Collins to go up on stage and sing a lovely song in Irish, accom-panied by Little Jimmy and Dean McCabe. Claire just got to the end of the last verse and the heavens opened, which saw many people running for shelter. Honestly Claire, it was not your singing, the heavy rain had been promised all day, but thankfully held off till most of the activities had finished.
Siobhan Gorman, Development Manager of Sandwell Irish Society said “It was a great day enjoyed by us and a lot of people, and a lovely opportunity for our Sandwell Rose to get involved. Thank you Claire for being such a sport, and thank you Denis for organising such a wonderful day.”
