A Year With Mid West Radio
By Brendan Mulvey
In my last story for 2005 I would like to share with you my first year at Mid West Radio.
The station is based in Ballyhaunis Co Mayo; there is also a studio in Ballina and an office in Castlebar. It was back in July 1989 Mid West Radio was launched at a glittering ceremony in Breaffy House Hotel, which is close to Castlebar. The station was an extraordinary success right from the start, in fact the station has never been out of the top three stations in Ireland in any of the surveys carried by The Independent Radio and Television Commission (IRTC) which is the controlling authority of local radio.

Tribute to George Best
Tens of Thousands Shed a Tear for ‘Georgie Boy’
Northern Ireland had never seen a day like this before, a true legend being buried in his native Belfast. George Best superstar of the soccer world, was given a final farewell by tens of thousands of people who had turned out in the heart of East Belfast to pay their respects on Saturday December 3rd. Many shed a tear for the 59 year old footballing genius, others stood behind crowd barriers in the pouring rain, simply applauding as his remains slowly passed by.
A who’s who of sporting personalities made the effort to honour George, people from the show business world, politicians, it seemed everyone wanted to say goodbye to Georgie Boy.
After an emotional service in Stormont’s Great Hall where Professor Roger Williams told mourners that he and George forged a strong bond during his long fight against illness, before and after his liver transplant.
“George Best gave so much and took so little in return” he told mourners. We will always remember George doing what he did best, weaving his magic in spellbinding flourishes on the soccer pitch, leaving the fans baying for more of his remarkable talent. God Bless you George.
Rest in Peace.
