Warwickshire GAA Update

Casements Pipped in Semi Final

Warwickshire`s senior football champions Roger Casements were unlucky to lose out to Scottish champions Dunedin Connolly`s from Edinburgh, in the recent Provincial Football semi final.
Casements performed well within themselves when accounting for St Dympna`s from Hertfordshire on a scoreline of 2:10 to 0:8. At the
same time London`s intermediate champions Harleston Harps
had a narrow victory over Lancashire`s St Peters, holders of the provincial crown.
In the 3rd quarter final, all of which were played at Pairc Na h`Eireann on the same day, Yorkshire`s Brothers Pearse had 6 points to spare over Gloucestershire standard bearers Western Gaels.
These results set Roger Casements up for a semi final clash with Dunedin Connolly`s, who received a bye in the quarter finals. Casements travelled confident of doing
well, but lost their way after
a promising start, leaving themselves with a mountain to climb in the final quarter. Try as they might, Warwickshire`s representatives were unable to achieve parity, losing by the narrowest of margins on a scoreline of 10 points to 9.
On the same afternoon at Pairc Na h`Eireann Casements suffered
a further blow when their ladies went under to John Mitchels
in the replay of the Warwickshire ladies final, while later on Harleston Harps saw off Brothers Pearse
by 6 points to reach the provincial final.

McDermotts at the Double

Just to show everyone that they are still a major force to be reckoned with, Sean McDermotts Senior Footballers regained the Senior Football League crown following their defeat of St Colmcilles of Cardiff.
McDermotts surprise early departure from the M Lambe Construction Warwickshire Senior Football Championship spurred them into action and they have deservedly topped the league with a couple of games to play, leading from the front throughout the season.
They also annexed the Fr Taaffe Cup for the first time by defeating St Mary`s by 4 points at Pairc Na h`Eireann recently in a close well contested match.
They will be seeking a treble when they take on St Barnabas in th final of the Fr Forde Cup.

Fr Forde Cup Final (Senior Football)
Sean McDermotts 2:11
St Barnabas 2:7

Sean McDermotts picked up their 3rd trophy in as many weeks when they overcame the challenge of St Barnabas in a well contested final.
After an even first 15 minutes McDermotts goaled to put themselves in the driving seat, leading 1:3 to 0:2. St Barnabas hit back with 2 points before they found the net themselves and establish a lead which they held to the half time whistle.
When Barry Brosnan`s long range delivery gave the Nottingham team a 4 points lead (2:5 to 1:4) early in the second half it looked like a shock may be on the cards, but McDer-motts hit back within a few minutes for their own second goal, to put the game back in the melting pot.
The teams were level on 2:7 each as the game entered the final 10 minutes and this is when McDermotts used their guile to seal victory with a number of well taken points, while St Barnabas crucially lost possession on several occasions without attempting a score.
McDermotts final point from Ossie Bennett was a well taken shot from a tight angle, while holding off a St Barnabas defender. Two of their previous 3 scores had also been well taken, also from tight angles.
The final whistle sounded with the kick out, signalling McDermotts retention of the Fr Forde Cup, in what proved to be a sporting and well contested final. This was commented upon by county chairman Larry McAuliffe as he presented the cup to McDermotts captain Dave Tierney.
