Ryder Cup Dodge to Spark Tax Probe
Revenue officials are to launch a crackdown on undeclared income earned by companies and individuals on the back of the Ryder Cup.
Inspectors from the Revenue Commissioners will increase their presence at the golfing showpiece, due to take place at the K Club next September.
Revenue officials will target local people and businesses that stand to profit from the event.
They intend that tax is paid on income derived from house rentals, sales of fake memorabilia and adhoc taxi services.
Officials are particularly keen to ensure that people renting their properties are disclosing the extra income and are fully tax compliant.
Houses in the area are being advertised online to rent for more than €35,000.
The event, which begins on September 22, is expected to be worth over €130m to the economy.
5th pay increase in 6 months for Bertie
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern didn’t realise he had got a wage hike of €25,000 in the past year, he revealed yesterday.
The Taoiseach also warned workers and unions about excessive expectations of high increases in the upcoming pay talks.
Mr Ahern’s salary now stands at €252,000, after his fifth wage increase in little over six months.
The average industrial wage is currently approximately €35,000. However, Mr Ahern said he only realised the full extent of the increase when he read it “I hadn’t got a letter out” he said.
But Mr. Ahern did not accept that he might have reason to be embarrassed by the continual increases. “I do look at my pay slip. I am not that wealthy,” he said.
