Black Country and East Midlands GAA schemes set to take off

22nd January will see the re-launch of the popular Black Country and East Midlands Schools GAA ‘Gaelic Football in Schools’ initiative. Over 500 young people from 16 Primary Schools in Wolverhampton, Sandwell, Walsall, Coventry, Rugby and Leicester will take to the Gaelic Football field in a bid to learn new skills.
The scheme run by the Warwickshire Schools GAA in partnership with local GAA clubs will run for 8 weeks and will see the full implementation of the Croke Park approved ‘First, Quick and Smart Touch Go Games’ and the launch of a unique cross curricula approach to GAA, which will allow young people to be introduced to Gaelic sports thro-ugh subjects such as History, ICT, Art and Geography. Primary School children will be given the opp-ortunity to demon-strate some of their newly learned skills at a Gaelic Football champion-ship on Tuesday 27th March.
The Black Coun-try GAA Schools will include- St. Mary’s Primary School (Wolverhampton), Holy Rosary Primary School (Wolverhampton), St. Thomas Canterbury Primary School (Walsall), St. Patricks Primary School (Walsall), Holy Name Primary School (Sandwell), All Saints Primary School (Sandwell).
The East Midlands GAA Schools will include- St. Patrick Primary School (Leicester), St. John Fisher Primary School (Leicester), English Martyrs Primary School (Rugby), St. Marie’s Primary School (Rugby), St. Thomas Moore Primary School (Coventry), Holy Family Primary School (Coventry), St. Anne’s Primary School (Coventry), Christ the King Primary School (Coventry), Our Lady of Assumption Primary School (Coventry), St. Augustine’s Primary School (Coventry).

 

Macs U-12’s clinch another award

The hotly contested Harp GAA Team of the Year 2006 award goes to Sean McDermott’s Under-12 Gaelic Football squad. This talented macs side beat a host of top schools and club GAA teams in the midlands for the award, recently completed the double by winning both the Warwickshire GAA league and championship. This team went onto represent Sean McDermott’s at the Feile Peile International 2006 are were one of only two teams from Britain to progress through to the championship cup competing against some of Irelands most accomplished GAA teams such as Eire Og (Carlow). Sigersons (Tyrone) and Rataoth (Meath). Many of this skilful macs team were the backbone of the successful Warwickshire Schools GAA development squad who played at Croke Park on Leinster Final day last July and some players have already progressed to the U-14 county squad representing Warwickshire in the Feile Peil NOg in Wicklow in 2006.
Coached by Kevin McEvoy and run by GAA stalwart Anne Sweeney the under-12 Sean McDermott’s award winning team comprised of players from St. Dunstan’s, Solihull School, Archbishop IIsley, St. Ambrose Barlow, St. Bernards, Archbishop IIsley and Bishop Challoner.
Other Harp Team of the Year nominees include; St. Augustine’s Primary School (Coventry), Warwickshire GAA U-17 County team, St. Bernard’s Primary School (Birmingham), Warwickshire Schools GAA U-12 Development Squad and Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School (Birmingham). The panel of judges included Declan Wall, Eavan Mulligan and Brian Roberts. Sean McDermott’s team will receive a sponsored coaching kit bag for winning the Harp Team of the Year Award.
