Michael Hannon - An Irish Gentleman Of Poetry
By Douglas McDonald

Michael Hannon was born in Dunmore in Co Galway in 1923. He went to the Christian Brother’s school in Skibbereen in Co. Cork in 1939 and completed his education in Tuam CBS one or two years later.
Employment was scarce in Ireland at that time so in 1946 he came across to England.
He began his work in the farm fields of Lincolnshire before eventually moving to Nottingham where he has lived  ever since.
Michael still returns to Ireland each summer to visit his many friends still living there. He is very well respected within the Irish community in Nottingham and this year had the honour of leading the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the city.
Michael has written many poetry books and has won National Poetry Awards.
Recently, he launched a CD of his songs and poetry with Julia Cassidy, and often he can be heard reading his poems and singing at various Irish centres in the city.
For the past ten years he has contributed a weekly poem to the Celtic Fringe  programme on BBC Radio in the East Midlands hosted by James McKeefrey.
I took these images of Michael in his home and garden as he was preparing to compose this weeks poem!
