Let's Wait For The Smoke To Settle
By Simon Cole
For months there has been speculation and discussion about potential smoking bans in public places in the UK and how widespread any ban on smoking in pubs would be, but even the sternest anti-smoking campaigner will have been taken aback by the recent Government announcement...More

Kate Is In The Chair
By Joan Cunningham
Keats preferred Autumn whilst old Bing sang about the wonders of Winter. If I could write a poem, a song or even a limerick, it would dwell upon the beauty of Spring and all that comes with this spectacular time of year. Of course, blossoms erupting from trees; bluebells metamorphosing into sheets of blue countryside and daffodils sprouting yellow buds of hope in every town house garden, may have something to do with my obsession with this Season.

Political Parties Upset Gerry Adams
Gerry Adams has accused Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, Labour and other parties of abandoning  1916, and of rewriting the Proclamation by diluting Irish sovereignty. In his presidential address to the Sinn Fein Ard Fheis in Dublin recently, the Sinn Fein president said those parties had allowed the ownership of Ireland to belong to the multinationals, "the giants of globalization." Ireland's destiny, he said, had been "handed over to the bureaucrats of the European union." While he agreed with the Taoiseach's decision to mark the 90th anniversary of the 1916 Rising, he disagreed with the military role in the event. "Is a military parade of two and a half thousand soldiers the best way to do this? I don't think so." Instead, he suggested "an inclusive, civic and cultural celebration, which educates us all." Mr Adams rejected any notion that the "republican struggle" could be advanced any further by an armed (IRA) campaign." This leadership is firmly opposed to such a departure\" he said. He predicted that Sinn Fein would be in a power-sharing administration in the North again. And on the party's potential role in government in the Republic, he said that if Sinn Fein could secure "a programme consistent with our republican objectives, we will look at being in government."
Drive Law Gone South
Legislation to bring Northern registered motorists driving in the south into Irish jurisdiction is being called for by a Sligo Senator. Fianna Fail Senator Geraldine Feeney claimed that Northern drivers who drive through border conuties are flouting the law here because they know they are outside of the Northern jurisdiction. She claimed that it can't be that hard to bring them under Irish motor laws.
