Big-hearted
Callum Finnegan has put his own health troubles to one side to
concentrate of helping other sick children.
The Yardley teenager, himself a patient at Heartlands Hospital, has
been praised by Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust for his tireless
fund raising efforts for Heartlands.
The 16-year-old has cystic fibrosis and is a regular to the children's
unit at Heartlands for antibiotic treatment and intensive physiotherapy,
visiting the unit several times a year for two-week periods.
Callum’s fund raising efforts have enabled him to purchase
televisions, DVD players, fridges and a selection of DVDs for the
children’s unit. February saw him donate a further two televisions
and DVD players, two fridges and a digital radio.
Callum’s parents, Tracey and Brendan Finnegan, said: “We
are delighted that although Callum has cystic fibrosis, he takes
great pleasure in fund raising to try to make the experience of other
children in Heartlands a bit easier and more enjoyable. He also fund
raises for other charities, including Marie Curie. We are both so
proud of him and it goes to show that good can come out of a bad
situation.”
Chris Morrell, play specialist at the trust, said: “Although
Callum has an ongoing condition, he is always thinking of others
before himself. He has organised many tribute nights and all funds
have come to the children's unit. Because he is so fantastic, I nominated
him for a wish to the Starlight Foundation in London. This wish has
been granted, and Callum is going on a Mediterranean cruise with
his family, which is brilliant.”
Callum has organised a number of events to raise funds, including
tribute act nights. His most recent event was an Oasis tribute night
on Friday February 23 at the Rover Social Club in Solihull. He also
belongs to the Heartlands Scooter Club, which delivers Easter eggs
to the children's unit each year.
Simon Jarvis, head of marketing and development at the trust said: “There
are over 200 different fund raising accounts to choose from, which
gives people the opportunity to make a donation to a specific illness,
service or department that is close to your heart.”
