Warwickshire GAA gets thumbs up in Westport

By Brian Roberts

On Sunday 11th February, Gaelic Games in Warwickshire got a huge lift when primary schools got voted in at the Cumann Na mBuscoil AGM in Westport in Mayo.
Cumman na mBunscoil, the national governing body for Gaelic sports, is the most extensive schools sports orgainsation in Ireland and regularly co-ordinates Gaelic football, hurling, camogie and rounders inter schools competitions. This new anglo-irish partnership will allow primary schools, affiliated with the Warwickshire Schools GAA in the midlands, to enter Irish schools events such as the annual school awards and the mini-7’s competition. The mini 7’s festival is now one of the most popular sports events amongst young people in Ireland with winners getting the opportunity to parade their skills at half time of the All-Ireland finals in Croke Park in September.
Warwickshire School GAA officials will now look to primary school teachers in the midlands to spearhead a committee which will see regular competition between national schools in Ireland and schools from the midlands. Primary School teachers interested in joining ‘Cumann na mBunscoil Warwickshire’ please contact the Schools GAA Office for further details.

Setanta to tame the Rebels

By Brian Roberts

This month will see Setanta Gaelic Football Club from Northfield in Birmingham take on some of the powerhouses of GAA as part of the clubs tour of the ‘Rebel County’ of Cork.
To celebrate the clubs 7 year anniversary, the under-13 boys’ squad will embark on their first overseas tour to Bandon, Cork. 12 players and 5 mentors will arrive in Cork airport on Friday 30th March and will be greeted by host GAA club St. Brogan’s. Setanta and St. Brogans first became acquainted when they went to head to head at the Feile Peile International competition in Birmingham last April. Almost 12 months on and strong friendships still remain with the Northfield club staying with host families in the Bandon area for 3 days. The carefully planned weekend will see Setanta play 4 games, have the opportunity to be involved in a practice run by Cork senior Football coaches and visit Tralee to watch Tyrone take on All-Ireland champions Kerry.
The squad will return to Birmingham on Monday 2nd April and hit the Gaelic football field in preparation for the Feile Peile International 2007 were they will once again go head to head with rivals St. Brogans of Bandon in Cork.
