A
woman blinded in the Omagh bombing is urging Midlanders to get
on their bike for charity.
Claire Gallagher is challenging members of the public to join the
Royal National Institute of the Blind (RNIB) on its Vietnam Bike
Ride from November 11-20.
Although Claire lost her sight in the Omagh bombing in Northern Ireland,
thanks to the support she received from RNIB she was able to rebuild
her life and attend university.
“I was determined to do everything I'd ever wanted to do but
without RNIB I don't know what would have happened to me,” she
said.
RNIB’s Vietnam Cycle Challenge promises to be the trip of a
lifetime for all those who sign up to take part.
A country renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and friendly
people, participants will travel from Da Nang in the north to Saigon
in the south - passing through lush mountain scenery, green paddy
fields, and alongside the South China Sea.
A spokeswoman for RNIB said: “This unique bike ride offers
a rare opportunity to experience a country taking its first steps
into the modern world.”
“RNIB is the UK's leading charity helping anyone with a sight
problem. We offer practical solutions, advice and support services
to help people at every stage of their lives.”
“We also offer friendly support, expert advice, Talking Books,
a wide range of practical products and training to help people like
Claire to learn new ways to get on with everyday life.”
“We are not looking for elite athletes to take part, but participants
will need to get fit. Most people who take part will never have done
this sort of thing before. To take part all we ask is that participants
pay an initial registration fee and then raise a minimum amount of
sponsorship.”
Anyone interested in taking part should call 0845 345 0054 or e-mail
overseas@rnib.org.uk for an information pack.
