Schools GAA

Warwickshire to sign up with
Cumann Na mBunscoil

By Brian Roberts

Recently the GAA grounds in Ruislip, London, was the focus of the Britain’s first Schools GAA Conference.
Teachers from London, Hertfordshire and Warwickshire were joined by officers of the Primary Schools GAA of Ireland, known as Cumann Na mBunsoil, to map the future of Gaelic sports in schools in Britain.
The day began with an insight into the GAA ‘Go Games’ initiative and was followed by a workshop on recruiting primary schools in the UK. With London and Hertfordshire already affiliated with Cuman Na mBunscoil, officers will now look to invite Warwickshire Schools GAA to join one of the biggest youth organisations in Ireland.

Primary Schools prepare for GAA kick-off

By Brian Roberts

Over 1000 boys and girls from 22 primary schools in the Black Country and East Midlands are set to take part in one of Britain’s most extensive GAA school projects.
The week of 22nd January will see young people from a wide variety of ethnic background take to the field in a bid to learn Gaelic Football skills.
The scheme run by Warwickshire Schools GAA based at Bishop Challoner Catholic School in Kings Heath will provide GAA coaching in Sandwell, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Leicester, Coventry and Rugby with a view to promote grass roots Gaelic sports in the midlands.
The 8 week programme will see Year 5 children pick-up new
skills such as the solo run, the hand pass and punt kick
whilst learning about Irish
culture, history and art through classroom activities.
The unique child centred scheme will culminate in a GAA festival in March.
