Brilliant Turnout For Macmillan Coffee Morning

A surprise birthday cake for Patsy from the girls at the forum
Patrica and her helpers had a crowded Irish Club for their coffee morning, and raised over a thousand pounds for MacMillan Nurses

Well what a fantastic turnout for the Macmillan Coffee Morning held at the Irish Club on the 30th September. Two hundred people came and gave their support for a very worthwhile cause. It was a great atmosphere, accompanied by the smells of home cooked soda bread, scones, apple pies- enough to make the mouth water!

Donations flowed, as bric-a-brac stall, flower stall, book & music stall attracted many. A host of fantastic raffle prizes, kindly donated by Stena Line, Knock Airport, The Alexander Theatre, Oh Velvet, Minstrel Music, Paragon Hotel, The Old Crown, The Westley Hotel, House of Frazer, Maura Murphy & many more, helped us raise the amazing total of £1085.29.
The atmosphere was livened up by the arrival of Kevin the piper, who did a great job with a happy birthday tribute to Patsy O’Brien (21 AGAIN Patsy?). Patsy, who needs no introduction, worked tiresly, as always, to make the morning a complete success, from spending hours baking to using her electric personality to ensure the event was well supported.
Thanks goes to the Irish Club for their hospitality, the Irish Forum for all their hard work & support, to all that donated time, effort & raffle prizes – here’s to next year!

Ireland’s Population is Fastest Growing in Europe
With a booming economy, buoyant job market and a very good quality of life, its little wonder Ireland finds itself a magnet for people eager to move to its shores.
The nations high wages and low taxes have meant it has become the most popular country in the European Union for migrant workers. But on top of that Ireland is now the fastest growing population in Europe.
The number of people living in the Emerald Isle has scaled the 4 million mark to 4.13 million up to April 2005.
But instead of putting any strain on the welfare system or loss of jobs the new wave of migrants have helped drive the Celtic Tiger and sustain the economy.
With its growing population and a booming economy, it has made Ireland the second richest country in the world per head of population after Luxembourg.
McCartney Family Honoured
The sisters and partner of murdered Belfast man Robert McCartney have been named Ireland’s People of the Year.
The five McCartney sisters and Robert’s fiancee, Bridgeen Hagans were chosen for the bravery they showed in leading a campaign for justice for Robert, despite widespread intimidation orchest-rated by individuals with strong links with the IRA.
Paula McCantred received the award on behalf of the family and said it represented a big morale boost for the family. She said, “We’re so honoured, it shows the people of Ireland want justice for Robert. It’s just a tiny minority who don’t. They should take a good look at themselves and have a good think about their actions and morals.”
