Storms batter Ireland
A few days in September saw storms batter Ireland. Met Éireann reported the strong winds and stormy conditions covering most areas from the east to west coast. Eircom and ESB were working around the clock to restore power and telephone lines. The DART was cancelled between Dun Laoghaire and Bray and many people found themselves grounded due to fallen trees blocking access on many roads. Motorists were advised not to travel if the journey was not necessary.
Flooding occurred in many parts of Co. Cavan and Co. Monaghan, the latter being most affected with parts of Clones and Ballybay submerged and homes needing the water to be pumped out.
Taxi regulations
September saw the enforcement of a new taxi fare structure in Ireland.
There have been numerous protests in the past few months regarding the plans to regulate private hire carfares. The new basic daytime fare is €3.80 and €4.10 will apply at night. These fares will be subjected to time and distance charges however the extra charges for luggage and airport runs will not apply.
Taxi drivers will be given a grace period to enable them to adjust to the new system and all taxis must be fully compliant by the 16th of October 2006.
