New appointment for Canal & River Trust’s West Midlands
Yvonne Gilligan, regional director of the sustainable transport charity Sustrans, has been appointed to the Canal & River Trust’s West Midlands Waterways Partnership.
The move was announced by the partnership’s chairman Peter Mathews CMG, who said: “Yvonne’s arrival will enormously strengthen the expertise and experience of the Partnership and complement the talented team we have on board championing the West Midland’s wonderful canals.
“The knowledge and experience she brings from Sustrans fits perfectly with our aspirations to encourage more people to use the West Midlands canal network for a wide range of activities.”
Birmingham-based Sustrans, which stands for SUStainable TRANSport, is a civil engineering charity whose aim is to encourage people to walk and cycle more as a starting point for reducing motor traffic and tackling its adverse effects.
Yvonne’s roles include engaging with regional policy makers to influence the sustainable transport agenda and to translate policy into practice through increased funding for this increasingly important agenda.
She said: “Both Sustrans and the Canal & River Trust have shared aspirations in the West Midlands to champion walking and cycling, supporting the delivery of active travel programmes and promoting the benefits of active travel.
“Clearly, canal towpaths provide easy routes for walkers and cyclists and my work with the Trust will include expanding this network.”
Yvonne uses Route 5 of the National Cycling Network to cycle to work every day, starting her day, cycling through great parks and beautiful green space and burning off calories in a very enjoyable way.
