Small Heath Boxing Club Open Day and Awards Event
Small Heath Boxing Club, now commonly known as Pat Benson Boxing Academy, staged a highly successful Open Day on Saturday 6th July at their Adderley Street base in Digbeth’s Irish Quarter. On a scorching day, the club was full to capacity, welcoming a crowd of over 400 people, from significant sponsors such as Pertemps People Development Group and Palletline PLC, to members of the Big Lottery Fund and the County Sports Partnership.
Guests of honour were The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Birmingham, Councillor Mike Leddy and Mrs Pauline Leddy who officially cut the ribbon and opened the club which underwent a Sport England Inspired Facilities refurbishment worth £50,000, providing new ceilings, lighting and heating throughout, a purpose built classroom and brand new ring room, disabled access toilets and updated female changing rooms.
The club also became the first in Birmingham to receive the highly sought after Clubmark award from the Amateur Boxing Association of England, marking an outstanding achievement in the same month that old boy Matthew Macklin fought for the World title. Former boxers include ABA champions Paul and Mark Ramsey, Wayne Elcock, Frankie Gavin and Barcelona Olympian Rowan Williams.
The day acted as a joint presentation event for 7 lads won outstanding achievement awards. They were: Cianan Folan, Bradley Savage, Jake Mulpeter, Louis Regan, Connor Benson, Connor Goodchild and Matty Turner. Other members to receive squad member awards were: Ciaran Houston, Azhar Khan, Brandon O’Neill, Peter Reilly, Jarrett Doherty, Kealan McColgan, Isral McKenzie and Harry Cogan.
